That’s right…a freakin’ coach. My first real job out of college was with a land development company, where I had the pleasure to experience my first coaching relationship. I learned more in 3 months meeting with my coach at that company than I’ve learned in any semester or year-long class I’ve taken in high school or college. Why? Because my coach knew what he was talking about.
The fact is, the American education system is a joke. High school teachers teach subjects they don’t even have degrees in, much less actual, real-world experience. And don’t get me started on college; please, I paid almost $40,000 for an education that amounted to nothing more than me writing down on a piece of paper, everyday, exactly what I thought the instructor wanted to see, nothing more, nothing less. The only learning that was done was learning to figure out, on day 1, the type of instructor I was dealing with and what to do to get an ‘A’. Thankfully, I recognized this and found time to study useful information on my own. One of the most important things I learned through self-study was that I wasn’t going to learn how to succeed in school; that’s something I’d have to find the answers to on my own.
A week into my first coaching relationship I began to realize the scale of all the knowledge I didn’t even know existed. I couldn’t believe the things that weren’t even mentioned in high school or college and just how little of what I had been taught all those years actually made any lick of difference in the real world. That’s when I realized there are two worlds out there.
Most people live in the world of limitation and the status quo. They don’t really believe much of anything, they may claim to, but in reality they just follow the herd. Go to college, get a stable job with a stable company, don’t take too much risk, have a family, save for retirement, and teach the next generation to do the same thing. Or worse, they think rich people are scam artists and power-peddlers; the only way to get rich, they say, is either by luck or stepping on the faces of everyone you pass on your way up the ladder. People in this world look at a millionaire and say things like, “Wow, he’s lucky!” Before people in this world are willing to set out on a course of action, they demand proof that others have successfully navigated the same waters, otherwise they’re unwilling to take the risk. They don’t see possibility where others have never been.
The other world is the world of dreamers, of visionaries, of so-called risk-takers. This is also the world in which the best of the best reside. This is the world of Roger Banister and Thomas Edison. In this world, people say, “I don’t see any reason that can’t be done.” Nearly every major milestone humanity has seen was accomplished by people in this world, often in the face of resistance from people in the other world.
So What’s My Point?
So, by now I’m sure you’re wondering, what’s the point of all this, right? It’s simple, it’s incredibly easy to be sucked into that first world, because it’s likely that most everyone around you is a part of it. Even though you may belong in the second world, you may start doubting yourself and what you believe in because no one around you seems to see things the same way. You may wonder if it’s you who sees things wrong and not everyone else. At a certain point, it can be hard to chose the best course of action; there are so many options and, while you think one may be the best, you’re really not sure. You sort of wonder around aimlessly without really committing to a certain course of action. You fail a few times, maybe more, and, if you’re persistent, you eventually find a way out of the maze and you succeed.
A Coach Can Help You Avoid Tempting Pitfalls
Instead of wondering around aimlessly, slowly finding the way to success by trial and error, why not get help from someone who’s already done it? You never know, you may find that all those little ideas you had to become better, those ideas you’ve been putting off because you weren’t sure if they’d work, were exactly the things you needed to do to succeed. Or maybe the opposite is true, maybe your current course of action has led to failure for a lot of other people before you and you’re just another lemming about to take the plunge.
A coach can solve this. He or she can help you identify your goals and outline the best strategies to accomplish them. He or she can help you remain focused on your goals, and always on the right track toward meeting them.
It All Sounds Great, But You’re Smart, Do You Really Need A Coach?
Some of you may be pretty smart, the types who’ve always found success in everything you’ve done. Do you really need a coach when you’ve had no problems tackling anything life has thrown at you so far? The answer’s yes! So, maybe you can find the path to success in 5 years, whereas it takes others 10 years or more. Wouldn’t you rather be there in a year? That’s what coaching will do for you; it will help put you on the quickest path toward achieving your goals.

Interesting article. I’ve never been able to put too much trust into counselors or coaches —
It’d be great if you shared how you went about finding a coach, costs if any, etc etc.
=) Thanks for sharing
